| The Beach Boys was Brain Wilson, and without him
there would have
been no 'band' or 'group'? Possibly. But then based on this assumption, one could
dispute the existence of most bands, including the Beatles, Rolling
Stones, Small Faces, etc. The Beach Boys are one of the most highly respected music artists - we'll overlook the Quo collaboration - and must rate in the top ten of groups originating from the 1960's. Therefore, as with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones LP's listed elsewhere, along with the information as standard, EMI's pressing identifications, up to the move to Reprise, are denoted. As a general guide, the letters GRAMOPHLTD located at 3 o'clock within the run-off represent 1 - 10, with G being 1, and at 9 o'clock are the 'Mother' stamper numbers. G1/ G1 (pressing identification of sides 1 + 2) is the very first 200 pressed by EMI, and would normally have been given to their sales representatives, disc jockeys, or reviewers. Further information that should be useful (and interesting?!) can be found on the Beatles dna page.. |

Section 1
Original UK Capitol albums issued with the
'Rainbow' label
| Due to
England's indifferent interest to surf and hot rod cars, several of the
early Beach Boys American releases were not issued in England until
later, when the
group became more 'popular' in the UK. However, this still did not guarantee a high
degree of sales. In fact, six out of the first seven UK releases did not
sell enough units to qualify entrance into the Top Albums Chart! Moreover, from 1962 to 1967, ten of their UK albums were released in a different order to the American counterparts. Consequently, the date of issue (as stated within Section 1), of seven of the Beach Boys UK LP's, differ from the recording's publishing date printed on the label. To confuse matters even further, the catalogue numbers of the Beach Boys albums were not automatically consecutive with the order of their timings of release. This can be observed by the sequence of issues set out on this page. Note that unlike most other EMI pressings, Beach Boys albums have the same catalogue prefix letters employed for the Mono and the Stereo equivalent throughout. Only their debut album was issued in Mono only. Okay, now that that's clearly understood... |
Unless otherwise stated, all LP's in this section are original pressings, with:
| the cover printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd |
| the cover having a laminated front; and a matte back with x 3 flaps |
| up to 'Little Deuce Coupe': back states "(Controlled by Electric & Musical Industries Ltd.)" |
| from 'Beach Boys Party ' onwards: back states "(The Gramophone Company Ltd)" |
| 'SOLD IN THE U.K...' conditions label |
| up to 'Best Of' 20856 having the 'Capitol' logo on the label positioned at 9 o'clock |
| 'Surfer Girl' onwards having the 'Capitol' logo on the label positioned at 12 o'clock |
The following listing is
in order of EMI's UK release schedule, with year stated.
