So you thought the BEATLES pages on
this site were somewhat daunting?....

|
As with all LP's
listed on the site:(1) any that come with an illustrated or lyric inner
sleeve; the disc is housed separate within a plain inner ~ as is if
the disc has been cleaned (2) much
time has been spent on this project in assessing individual
grades, etc. Vinyl stated as VG+ in
most cases signifies very fine lines that are evident under a spotlight. (3) the majority have been professionally cleaned.
(4) all are original UK issues
unless o/w specified.
All these records
have been inspected thoroughly. Uniform grade is Sleeve / Vinyl.

UK LP's
1964 ~ 1969 Albums : UK pressings
|
Most of Decca's
1960's Long Players were
housed within “skimpy” covers, thus making it a
difficult task to locate NM examples... or even ‘Excellent’!
Their 1960’s
non-gatefold sleeves can
be identified by the tapered spine at the top and bottom. Therefore, it would be
obvious if a 1970’s sleeve had been used (switched) to house an
original 60’s pressing! This criteria does not apply to
gatefold or fold-out covers. These have their own characteristics, as explained on
this page, within each appropriate section. Where
f/ b is stated, this
refers to flip-back (flap) sleeve.
DECCA's output can be quite daunting for labelologists, being as
there are combinations of type layouts to amass! However, there is one
most important criteria that determines an original UK pressing,
and that is the DECCA logo on the label with
one contradiction >. This is termed as
"unboxed" or "open". As with EMI's labels, this was
modified the latter end of 1969
Furthermore, up until the latter end of 1967, Decca's record stamping for
UK albums can be identified by a "ridge" that is one third in from the
perimeter of the label. This is also termed as "deep groove",
especially within the classical fraternity. Therefore, any LP's issued
prior to 1968 on this page that do not have this characteristic are
denoted. Oh, and just for good measure, the (end) matrix stamping
digits are stated for the benefit of the purist!
You may be thinking by now that all this can be a daunting task
that can be somewhat tedious, but you are assured this is not the case!
Dedicated and serious collectors have realised that in recent
years record collecting has become a more exciting hobby, and
that "buying right" is a proven investment, often being on a
massive scale! But .. do please remember that the banks do
not sell records, and in return we dealers do not lend money or give
credit. ha!

Further information pertaining to England's 1960's pressings via CBS, Decca,
EMI, etc, can be found on the Sales
Policy page.
All of the following UK albums include the original Decca inner sleeve that is
applicable to said issue,
the condition being appropriate to the grade of the sleeve and disc.

having the full credits for this album. Note that only
initial printings of this inner sleeve credit The
London Bach Choir. All subsequent inners have this blacked out.
Original posters are of a thin paper having a matte finish. Later
editions are heavier stock, becoming shinier and of a darker print.

The
grading of these card covers pertains to the rubbing that seems to be
unavoidable unless they are untouched, and the records are stored separate
from the covers from new! The sleeves do not have any deletion
cut-outs, drill holes, etc, and are not split. They are of fresh
appearance, meaning not limp, bent, etc.
Unless otherwise
stated, the labels here are royal blue, with STEREOPHONIC within a silver
wideband, with the sloping silver LONDON logo above this. Most were purchased from new in
the latter 60's in England via special order. BS = Bell Sound
pressing plant albums (etched within run-off).

For
are short period at the latter end of 1971 and early 1972, Decca used white
labels, having black print. The reason is unknown, perhaps a shortage
of blue ink??. Has been said that these were for "export", but I
would disagree with this theory. Anyway, these are an interesting variation to
collect!

Decca
albums pressed in the 1980's that have the 1970's style labels are of thinner
vinyl, and the
labels are of a lighter blue, having the effect of colour change when angled
against a light.
Of course, the inner sleeve is the tell-tale sign, as long as this has not been
changed!
