Although their debut album was issued the end of 1968, and in the USA only, Soft Machine were formed in 1966, consisting of Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayres, Mike Ratledge, and Robert Wyatt. In 1967 Chas Chandler became their manager, and a Polydor single was issued in the UK, with another of Chas's prodigy, Jimi Hendrix, guesting on "Reelin' Feelin' Squeeelin'" , side 2 of "Love Makes Sweet Music". 

From the onset, the main line-up of the Soft Machine changed sporadically, with Daevid Allen leaving even before their debut recording (due to his Visa's expiry),  and the departure of Kevin Ayres before the Soft's second album.
