Introduction |
The rise of the 'pop record' and the associated artistes, with some being very good, others who were just lucky to be at the right place for a moment in time, ready to be exploited to the media. And what did we have? Television - but many still have BBC only receivers, or even none at all. Music papers were the main exploitation and manipulative force, and then later on regular pop magazines. Radio with a very limited choice and airtime for broadcasting what the young people wanted to listen to, particularly as the 'Needle Time' regulation was the order of the day. However, this ridiculously antiquated directive gave rise to the Pirate Radio! I digress... But who was it that hit on the brilliant idea of organizing shows all over the United Kingdom, predominantly in cinemas? With just the one large screening room, these were a ready made mass of bums-on-seats auditoriums, with free advertising just by displaying a poster and leaving on the counter a pile of fliers containing booking forms. Okay, these shows were also publicity exercises to increase the sales of record. But just look at some of the listings on this page. One could see in the flesh four of five current 'stars' in one fell swoop - and for many, locally! Nowadays it is £30 ~ £70 to see just one artist or group. Plus one has to go through the ordeal of driving miles, and then paying extortionate fees for parking the car at the venue! And as for the price of refreshments.... Yes, there were some plus points about the 'good old days. With the crucifixion of our classic British cinemas, what a fantastic concept that will never be repeated! |
